Glenavy is a village located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. GeographyThe village lies on the Glenavy river a tributary river of Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in Northern Ireland. Glenavy river enters the Lough opposite Ram's Island, the largest island on the Lough. Historical GlenavyGlenavy has a church founded by St. Patrick who founded a church locally, was the place where the ancient kings of Ulidia or Eastern Ulster were crowned. More recentlyMore recently Glenavy has undergone significant population growth, which has placed pressure on the village infrastructure and created many social issues to be addressed. The Glenavy Youth Project was established to help provide a community focus for young people. While Glenavy is predminately rural in character, it recently became part of the new City of Lisburn, located 10 miles away. |
